As part of an introductory eLearning course for first responders to radiological emergencies, I faced the challenge of transforming technical IAEA publications into engaging, hands-on learning experiences. The course comprises five interactive modules that integrate realistic scenarios to help learners connect theoretical concepts with real-life application.
One key component I developed is the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Doffing exercise, inspired by the in-person workshops conducted by IAEA trainers. The goal was to replicate the step-by-step, careful removal of protective equipment, crucial for preventing contamination, through an intuitive online interaction.

First, the different PPE items were designed in Adobe Illustrator and layered over a base image to create a clear, realistic visual for the exercise.
Then, I considered that the most suitable interaction for this exercise would be the default drag-and-drop interaction available in Articulate Storyline, which allows the items to go back to the original position when dropped to the incorrect target. However, the default interaction only allows submitting all items at once, which is not conducive to the granular, sequential feedback I visualized for this exercise. To overcome this limitation, I customized the interaction by disabling the submit button and instead programmed conditional triggers.
When an item is correctly dropped onto its container, a “correct” feedback layer appears, then automatically advances to the next slide: a visually identical copy but with one less item to doff.

This slide progression simulates a continuous interaction flow, so learners receive immediate, individualized feedback after each step without perceiving slide changes. To enhance realism, I implemented “hidden” object states that change when an item is dropped correctly, causing the item to disappear when dropped into the container and reinforcing the learner’s progression.

At the end of the exercise, and after verifying contamination levels, users exit the activity and complete the module.
This approach provides an essential introduction to PPE doffing procedures, serving as a valuable complement to hands-on, in-person training.
